Judgement of Fiction: The Scorpio Races

Rating - 4.5/5

Maggie Stiefvater is a brilliant author. Though 'The Raven Cycle' is my favorite piece of her work, 'The Scorpio Races' is a close second. 'The Scorpio Races' follows two teens competing in a dangerous horse race on their island. Their island, also known as Thisby, lies in the fictional Scorpio Sea. Every November, the island hosts the Scorpio Races. Young daredevils compete on magic horses, the capall uisce, that rise from the sea. The prize - ultimate bragging rights and a fairly big purse.  The alternating narratives of Sean Kendrick and Puck Connolly keep you interested or wishing it was only one point of view.

Sean Kendrick is a 17 year old orphan working on a horse farm called Malvern Yards. He has won the races 4 times riding on his favorite horse, one of the magical horses, a stallion named Corr. As he prepares to compete in the current races, he stumbles upon Puck Connolly.

Puck Connolly is an orphan as well. She lives with her older brother Gabe, who dreams of leaving Thisby for the mainland, and her younger brother Finn, who dreams of an apprenticeship with the bakery. When Benjamin Malvern, owner of Malvern Yards and about 80% of the island notifies her of the pending foreclosure of their house, she decides to enter the races on Dove, a horse 15 hands tall, however in comparison to the capall uisce, seems to be but a mere pony.

Together, Sean and Puck will train for and compete in the legendary race while growing closer and closer. This was such a good pining book. You know they're going to happen, and if instinct was not enough, several characters remind you throughout the book. Pining + Happy Ending + Maggie Stiefvater = Great Book! 'The Scorpio Races' screenplay is also being written.
